Movieland Wax Museum
The Movieland wax museum at Anaheim was the only one of its kind in the United States. After 43 years of glorious existence, it closed its doors to the public in October 2005. During its existence of a little over 4 decades, the Movieland wax museum played host to over 10 million visitors. Each visitor who travel in Anaheim had the rarest of rare opportunities of getting as close as one can to their choice celebrities - albeit in wax.
In comparison to the Hollywood Wax Museum, the Movieland Wax Museum at Anaheim was much superior for the sets they exhibited as well as the quality of the exhibits.
The exhibits numbered nearly 300 and most of them remarkably lifelike wax figures. Original costumes worn by the celebrities adorned the exhibits. In some cases the recreating the costumes were as time consuming and painstaking as the wax figures themselves. Garbo's costume for example involved a cost of $35,000 and a cool 125 hours.
About 50 from the Movieland Wax Museum's long list of celebrity figures went to San Francisco to a sister museum and another batch of 80 found its way to a South Korean museum. The rest were auctioned to the public in March 2006. The auction fetched over a million dollars.
The building which housed this great museum is demolished and in its place is 'Movieland Plaza' a shopping centre which features a food court and a 'Best Buy store'. Beyond the name itself, there will some reminders of the great Movieland wax museum. Some of the wax stars including Rudolph Valentino, Liz Taylor, Shirley Temple, Superman, General George Patton, Austin Powers and the giant replica of "David" from Michelangelo will continue to remain in the shopping centre encased in glass. If you had the opportunity to visit this museum for Anaheim travel in its full glory, you cannot help feeling deprived.
